Torrenting is a way of downloading files to your computer from lots of other people's computers. You download a small "torrent" file that tracks the file you actually want across any other computer that has already got that file. You then download it off those computers whilst uploading any parts you have to others.
Things You'll Need Edit
- A web browser. This page assumes you use Firefox version 3.5.2.
- A torrent program. This page assumes you use µTorrent version 1.8.4.
- A torrent website. This page assumes you use Mininova.
Keep in mind that the instructions and screenshots below are specific to the above program versions. If you use other programs or versions, you may have to take different steps.
Go to Mininova and type in the name of the file you want in the search box. Then click "search".
On the results page, click on the "Seeds" column heading to sort the results by the number of people who have the complete file. Then click on the small green arrow in the "name" column heading next to the file you want. Try to get the file with the highest Seeds to Leechers ratio as this will make your download faster.
Firefox will pop up a box asking you what to do with the torrent file. µTorrent should already be selected in the "Open With" option. You probably always want µTorrent to handle your torrents so check the box entitled "Do this automatically for files like this from now on". Then click "OK".
µTorrent will now open and display the following window. Choose a location for it to save to under "Save As" and then click "OK".
µTorrent will now download your file. You can see how long you have to wait and how much has been completed in the main window.
